Cultural psychology of India
History and concept of time

I was a note-taker for a handicapped girl taking history classes in my US univ. I recollect the lectures and today I somehow remembered having heard history lessons. Here I will highlight the contrast between how we Indians view history opposed to Americans. Its not about the timeline but the cultural psychology. Americans view history as linear - as going forward in straight line and the goal is always progress. i.e the future is supposed to be better than before. When Americans think about history they think about founding fathers, museums and textbooks. Its an intellectual pursuit. They think about the liberty and Individualism. Indians think time is traditionally viewed as a wheel (\"Chakra\'), the Eras(\"yugas\") rise, fall and repeat. The emphasis is more on the lessons learned and the eternal truth. Itihasa means \'so it verily happened\'. Ramayana and Mahabharata are not just epics, they are the standards for moral code and daily duty. This weekend, feeling like telling cute kids in the neighborhood some precious historical stories.
